New Brunswick features the highest value added agricultural sector of any Canadian province. New Brunswick’s potato industry has been a leader in adding value to our industry. New Brunswick continues its leadership role with examples such as CANUSA Foods (dehydraded potatoes), Asapco Foods (fresh / chilled / frozen),
a division of Strong Farms Ltd. and the McCain Foods research and technology center.
The potato is the perfect food for processing. Consider the impact of the french fry and the potato chip. McCain Foods, the world leader in frozen potato products, and Humpty Dumpty Snack Foods, the leading Canadian owned potato chip company, grew to its enviable positions with
involvement from New Brunswick’s potato industry.
With headquarters and major production facilities in Florenceville and Grand Falls, New Brunswick, McCain Foods remains an integral partner in the New Brunswick potato industry. And the New Brunswick potato industry remains a major contributor to the success of McCain Foods.
Humpty Dumpty Snack Foods, with facilities in Hartland New Brunswick, is another Canadian success story. Humpty Dumpty relies on New Brunswick growers for the chipstock potatoes used in this plant.
The "Shepody" potato variety is a mainstay of the processing sector. It was developed right here in Fredericton, New Brunswick by the Potato Breeding Program at Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada’s Potato Research Centre. The Centre has a Canada-wide focus with a national potato breeding program and comprehensive research programs in potato pest management, physiology and soil and water.
